Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding in the New York Daily News

On March 14th Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding provided expertise to an article in the New York Daily News about sleeve gastrectomy. Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure that removes about 80% of the stomach while leaving the gastric system intact. This is not the installation of a sleeve, another weight loss surgery.

In the article, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding discusses how the surgery is one step in the weight loss process rather than a quick fix. The article highlights celebrities who have used it to help them start their path toward healthier lifestyles.

Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding explains in the article that the reduction in the size of the stomach means that it goes from holding about four cups of food to about half a cup of food. The new size causes the patient to feel fuller after meals of smaller portions than before the surgery. After the surgery, patients first subsist on a liquid diet for several months. Patients must be mindful of what they eat and start exercising in order to see the benefits of the surgery but, as she points out in the article, it is much easier to exercise after weight loss.

Patients usually lose 80-100 pounds within a year or two of the surgery but sleeve gastrectomy is not for everyone. Patients generally need to lose 75-100 pounds and are classified as “morbidly obese” by a BMI over 40.

Celebrities Lisa Lampanelli and Rosie O’Donnell have both had the surgery and give their take on the life-changing procedure in the article.
