Exercise After Bariatric Surgery: Endurance Exercises — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding and Dr. George Fielding

Start on the Right Track After Bariatric Surgery with Endurance Exercises

Studies show that patients who exercise after bariatric surgery have better weight loss outcomes than those who do not. In addition to adhering to the prescribed post-surgery diet, it is an important part of achieving healthy weight loss. Here, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding and Dr. George Fielding describe endurance exercises that may become part of your routine. These are general suggestions. It’s always important to follow your doctor’s specific guidelines after your surgical procedure.

What are Endurance Exercises?

Endurance exercises help strengthen your heart and lungs. They’re also called aerobic exercises because your body uses more oxygen doing these exercises than it does while resting. These exercises will improve your stamina so that you become less winded when you exert yourself. They’re a great way to burn calories while improving your cardiovascular health.

Beginning Exercise After Bariatric Surgery

Swimming is an excellent endurance exercise after bariatric surgery. The first exercise doctors commonly recommend is walking. You can count your steps using a pedometer or fitness tracker and gradually increase your steps each day. To keep track of your progress, you may find it helpful to create a fitness journal. As your stamina increases, you can challenge yourself by walking on inclines. Eventually, you can consider hiking, jogging and running when your doctor clears you for these activities.

There are many aerobic activities you can incorporate as part of daily life. When you’re strong enough, begin taking the stairs instead of the elevator wherever you go. Household chores and yardwork can also help get the heart rate up and improve your endurance.

Many people find a sense of community and new motivation when joining a gym. Riding a stationary bike or using an elliptical machine are excellent for increasing endurance. Water aerobics and swimming provide good full-body workouts, too, that are easy on the joints. When you are ready, you can join aerobics and dance classes for a greater challenge.

Exercise after bariatric surgery doesn’t have to be traditional either. You might enjoy an alternative form of exercise instead of heading to the gym.
