Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery a Good Choice for You? — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding

Examining the Criteria for Weight Loss Surgery

Long term studies have shown that weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) has excellent outcomes for people struggling with obesity. People are able to safely lose weight and keep it off. In addition, many obesity-related issues improve or resolve. Bariatric surgery procedures like gastric sleeve surgery can help resolve high cholesterol and other comorbidities. Here, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding presents the qualifications for weight loss surgery procedures such as gastric sleeve.

Qualifying for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

The National Institutes of Health have specific recommendations regarding who is suitable for bariatric surgery. One of the primary considerations is body mass index (BMI). To calculate your body mass index, divide your weight by the square of your height. This is normally expressed as kg/m2. (You can use an online body mass index calculator for quick conversion.)

Body mass index is one of the criteria considered before recommendation of surgery for weight loss.

Body mass index alone is not an indicator of health. It is a useful benchmark for doctors and researchers in determining the best course of treatment, however. Doctors also consider your overall health and history. Generally they recommend bariatric surgery for patients with a:

  • BMI of at least 40. Doctors may also recommend the procedures for patients who are more than 100 pounds overweight.
  • BMI of at least 35 and coexisting medical conditions. Doctors look for the presence of at least one comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea.
  • History of obesity and inability to lose weight other ways. Doctors typically recommend these surgical procedures only after patients have unsuccessfully lost weight through diet and exercise.

Some of the above criteria are shifting as researchers examine trends in patient health. For example, emerging data suggests patients with a BMI of 30 and comorbidities are good candidates for weight loss surgery. Medical professionals always consider your overall health before recommending surgical procedures, too.
