An Introduction to Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, or “Lap Band” Surgery — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding

Lap Band Surgery: A Low Risk Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgeries are designed to help obese patients lose weight and keep it off for good.  In this new blog series, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding and colleagues will walk you through the basics of a popular type of bariatric surgery, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, commonly known as “lap band” surgery.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Several types of weight loss surgeries are now available, each altering the capacity of the stomach in a different way.  Currently, one of the safest and least invasive options is laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.

During lap band surgery, the surgeon places an inflatable band around the top portion of the stomach.  This creates a small pouch, effectively limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold.  One advantage of this procedure is that the band is easily adjustable through a port.  During future visits, a doctor can inflate the band to change the size of the stomach pouch without additional surgery.  Unlike some other gastric surgeries, gastric banding is also reversible.

Another advantage of this particular surgery is that it is performed laparoscopically.  The laparoscope is a surgical tool with a tiny camera on the end which can be inserted into small incisions.  This means a less invasive procedure, shorter surgery time, and faster recovery compared to conventional surgeries.  Typically, patients leave the hospital the day of surgery or the morning after.

Are You a Good Candidate for Lap Band Surgery?

Severe obesity increases the risk of developing numerous health issues, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.  If you have BMI over 40 and have been unable to sustain weight loss through other methods, bariatric surgery may be recommended.  Losing excess weight can significantly reduce your health risks and lead to a longer, healthier, happier life.

Patients typically see significant weight loss two to three years after surgery, with continued dietary modifications and exercise.
