Mental and Emotional Preparations Before Bariatric Surgery — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding, NYU

Are You Mentally Ready for Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery?

During preparations for bariatric (weight loss) surgery, there tends to be much emphasis on physical preparations.  All these are designed to ensure patient safety and readiness for the procedure, to give the best chance for a positive outcome.  Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding (NYU Langone Weight Management Program) and colleagues also appreciate the importance of emotional preparation for bariatric surgery.

Enhancing Bariatric Surgery Outcomes Through Emotional Preparation

  1. Realistic Expectations.  It’s important to go into your procedure with reasonable expectations regarding the amount of weight you will lose and how fast you’re likely to lose it.  Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor and weight loss management team for guidance on your particular case so you’ll know what to expect.
  2. New Habits, New Life.  For many, deciding to undergo bariatric (weight loss) surgery is one of the biggest life-changing decisions they’ll ever make.  Let it mark the beginning of a healthier and more active life for you.  Begin planning and embracing some of the new food choices that you’ll make as you are able to introduce small meals post-surgery.  Think about types of exercise that you may find enjoyable, too, as they’ll help you continue to lose weight steadily in the years after bariatric surgery.
  3. Consider Support Networks.  Your doctors and medical team are an excellent source of primary support and information.  You’ll benefit from their expertise in their fields and also on your individual case.  It’s a good idea to call upon friends and family who are supportive of your weight loss journey, as well.  There are also local support groups and internet groups comprised of fellow bariatric surgery patients eager to share support and experience.
  4. Professional Counseling Services.  Anxiety and depression are also common among those who have struggled with obesity.  Seeking professional counseling may be helpful before and after bariatric surgery, especially if food is a particular source of comfort.
