Exercise After Bariatric Surgery: Strength Exercises — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding and Dr. George Fielding

Improve Muscle Tone After Bariatric Surgery with Strength Exercises

Studies have shown that regular exercise after bariatric surgery results in greater weight loss and faster resolution of obesity-related health issues. It’s important to do different types of exercise as part of your routine, too. You will start with endurance exercises and then add flexibility exercises. Finally, you will add strength exercises. It’s important to discuss your specific exercise program with your doctor. Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding and Dr. George Fielding offer some general suggestions below.

How Do Strength Exercises Help?

Strength exercises are important for strengthening and firming your muscles. They can also improve your coordination and balance in addition to preventing injury during other types of exercise. Studies suggest that strength training and increasing your muscle mass can improve your metabolism and boost “good” cholesterol levels. All of these things will improve your physical recovery and boost your overall fitness.

Exercise After Bariatric Surgery Should Include Strength Training

After you are comfortable with endurance and flexibility exercises, talk with your doctor about strength training.Strength exercise after bariatric surgery can help you in many ways.

Exercise balls are a good way to improve your core strength. At first, just practice sitting on the ball and staying balanced. When you’re ready, you can use it for other strength building exercises.

Next, try some basic bodyweight exercises.  These exercises do not require weights or exercise machines. Instead, the resistance against gravity comes from your own weight. Through pushing, pulling and lifting various parts of your body, you can improve your muscle tone. Begin with a low number of repetitions and gradually increase as the exercises feel less challenging.

Finally, when you’re sufficiently recovered from your surgical procedure, you may try lifting weights. Again, start with a much lower weight than you suspect will be challenging. Even very light weights begin to feel heavy after many repetitions.
