Healthy Habits for Life with Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding, NYU Weight Management Program Bariatric Surgeon

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a safe and effective procedure for weight loss. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions as you transition back to eating solid foods. The dietary changes that you will make after this procedure will help you prepare for a lifetime of healthy and nutritious eating. Here, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding presents the fourth article in a series of what to eat after gastric sleeve surgery.

Phase Four After Gastric Sleeve Surgery: Soft Solid Foods

After you have successfully completed the two-week pureed food stage, your doctor will recommend soft solid foods. While your food should be soft, it does not need to be blended or pureed. Remember to continue to chew your food very slowly (at least 25 chews per bite) and always eat protein first. The goal at this stage is 75 grams of protein per day. Continue to separate drinking all liquids by 30 minutes from eating. During your fifth and sixth weeks after the procedure, Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding suggests incorporating foods like:

  • Soft-cooked vegetables
  • Steamed fish
  • Soft noodles
  • Canned fruits
  • Thinly-sliced deli turkey or ham
  • Beans and peas
