Physical Preparations Before Lap Band Surgery, a Low Risk Bariatric Surgery Procedure — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding
UncategorizedA Brief Overview of Diet and Health Assessment Before Bariatric Surgery
In this blog series hosted by Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding (NYU Langone Weight Management Program) we are exploring various aspects of the lap band surgery procedure. This bariatric surgery is one of the lowest risk among currently available options. Our previous article described the procedure of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding in more detail. Here, we discuss some of the important pre-surgical preparations to ensure readiness for the procedure, which is commonly performed by Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding, NYU Langone Weight Management Program.
Bariatric Surgery Patients Must Follow a Specific Pre-Surgery Diet
Before undergoing a bariatric surgery such as the lap band procedure, patients are given specific pre-surgery diet instructions. At the NYU Langone Weight Management Program, we prescribe a low calorie diet in which most nutrition comes from high protein shakes. Additional snacks such as steamed or raw vegetables are permitted, as long as they are lower calorie/carb.
This high protein diet can be quite dehydrating, so patients must be vigilant about water intake. Unlimited amounts of diet drinks (including diet soda and diet ice tea) and also permitted. Skim milk and artificial sweeteners are allowed in coffee and tea.
The goal of this diet is to shrink the liver, which will make the surgical procedure safer. A “fatty liver” is one of the side effects of obesity and such enlargement of the liver can increase risk of complications.
Pre-Surgery Physical Exam
Before surgery, the medical team interviews the patient to ensure they have followed the pre-surgery diet and other pre-admission instructions regarding medications. They also administer blood tests, a chest x-ray, and an EKG (electrocardiogram).
Discuss Concerns with Your Doctor
In the days before lap band surgery, patients are encouraged to voice any concerns about their pre-surgery preparation, surgery day, or post-surgery plans. Weight loss surgery is a life-changing procedure and requires continued commitment to a new diet and lifestyle. Success is a team effort and depends upon open communication between the patient and the medical team.
