Lap Band Surgery Helps Improve Obstructive Sleep Apnea — Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding

Dr. Ren-Fielding, Lap Band Expert, on Recent Studies of Post-Surgery Sleep Improvement

There are numerous health issues that arise in conjunction with obesity. Many of these either improve or completely resolve after significant weight loss. One of the most effective weight loss strategies for those suffering from obesity is bariatric surgery. A recent study by Fusco and colleagues examined sleep improvement in patients after lap band surgery. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common comorbidity that can lead to other health issues if untreated. Dr. Ren-Fielding, lap band expert, examines the findings of this promising study.

Improvement of Obstructive Sleep Apnea after Lap Band Surgery

Obstructive sleep apnea results from blockage of the airway during sleep. In obese patients, this is typically due to excess soft tissue. It can cause snoring and shallow breathing. In addition, brief disruptions of breathing may occur. Unfortunately, this usually means poor sleep for patients and their partners. Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to other health risks. For example, patients are at risk of developing health issues including hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and stroke.

Fusco and colleagues examined outcomes for 359 patients. 117 had obstructive sleep apnea. Data two years post-surgery was available for 57 of these patients.

One year after surgery, 69% of patients reported improvement to their OSA symptoms. This increased to 86% two years after bariatric surgery. The relative breakdown for weight loss in the groups:

  • Resolution of OSA: −9.7 kg/m2 BMI, −21.7% weight loss
  • Improvement to OSA: −8.3 kg/m2 BMI, −18.7% weight loss
  • No change: −5.7 kg/m2 BMI, −13.2% weight loss

The difference in BMI change among the above groups was not statistically significant. Sleep as assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale significantly improved, however. The overall group also experienced improvement and resolution of other comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

In conclusion, these data offer more evidence that bariatric surgery is an excellent option for treating OSA in conjunction with obesity. This strengthens the recommendation for this treatment by bariatric surgeons like Dr. Ren-Fielding. Lap band surgery is an excellent, low-risk bariatric surgery option with many benefits. In addition to helping patients sustain weight loss, it can significantly improve comorbidities. As a result, patients can enjoy longer and healthier lives.
